Well, you can imagine my excitement when I received a request for age inappropriate dressing! A gold mine I tell you…. I had so much fun and can I also tell you, I could have gone for hours on the ‘bad frocks’ but felt the need to reign it in. I then received a ‘by request’ for ‘fab frocks’ on ladies of a certain age, so of course I am obliging this request……
Meryl Streep – a woman I truly admire for so many reasons. She is a brilliant actress who takes on challenging roles, just because she can. She has NOT had surgery and is aging the way nature intended and is a true lady. She also knows how to dress! She favours an updo with her hair and prefers solid colours as opposed to prints. She opts for simplicity and is class all the way. It’s not every woman that can pull off a floor kength grey frock. Even the sound of it is a bit frightening, but here’s Meryl rocking it.
Whilst not my fave of her frocks, this floor length deep V neck red frock Meryl wore to the 2018 Oscars was age appropriate and stunning.
Even in black velvet, she has a trend she sticks to. A deep V neck, a simple skirt and a solid colour, occasionally with some embellishment.
But – when Meryl has a bad frock, she has a BAD frock….
Gelen Mirren – I have to say she rarely makes a mistake as well. The Dame knows what suits her and sticks to it. Again, she selects solid colours, shows off her décolletage and stays fairly classic. This burgundy Golden Globes frock is one of my favourites, and that diamond necklace is just as stunning as the frock! I like a lass who embraces her grey hair too….
Seriously, she can compete with any younger actress when it comes to the red carpet. This bejeweled teal frock with ruched waist is glorious!
Although I feel her eye makeup was a little too heavy in this endemble, the frock of pink tulle over orange is a-mazing!!
I mean – is this not a magnificent vision in simple black….
If you got it – flaunt it and at her age, Helen Mirren looks after herself and rocks any look she chooses – who could forget this bikini shot….?
Bette Midler – I am a HUGE fan of her and love the way she carries herself through anything with such a fun attitude. This has to be one of my all time favoutite looks on her. I love the wide square neck and tiny cap sleeves. It is perfectly fitted for her frame, with exquisite embroidery.
Even in a frock which may have appeared to be ‘too young; for her on the rack, looks fab here as she performed at the 2019 Oscars.
Even in a fitted, floor length frock adorned with navy beads and sequins, Bette dresses to show off her best assets.
Stockard Channing – who will forever be Rizzo for me! She looks smoking for her age and again, knows what works for her. This black frock with a wide neckline, cap sleeves and some gathering detail at the front waist is age appropriate and still fab in it’s simplicity.
Resplendent in red! Stockard knows what works again with a wide neck, cute little straps and a fab fit on this frock, with matching accessories. Do we care she has a few wrinkles under her arm…? No, we don’t. Because she looks fantastic!
Even as Rizzo, she knew what worked for her shape.
Sally Field – having been around for sooooooo many years, from The Flying Nun to Steel Magnolias (one of the BEST movies ever…..) we have seen her age gracefully. She plays roles that are credible for a woman her age and she rocks a red carpet too. Spectacular navy blue plunging wide neckline with cute sleeves, this frock is heaven.
Whilst the frills on the skirt of this frock are not my fave, I do love the rest of it. The gathering at the centre front waist are perfect and for all it’s simplicity, this frock is really very pretty. Just don’t look at the skirt hem….
Again, a little too much with the embroidery AND feathers – I would have picked ONE and stayed with it, she knows a flattering neckline when she sees it.
I mean – I know she was a nun, but really, this get up really was dreadful!!
We all know how totally fabulous green is on a red head! Julianne Moore knows it too. She has worn a few in her time and they are All stunning on her.
Although also not a frock I am jumping up and down about, this colour is fab and those earring!!!
It’s VERY important to understand what shade of green works though….. Not only is the design of this frock hideous, the colour literally pains me….
I could forgive a mistake like this once, but twice……….Julianne Darl – this really is NOT your finest moment either.
Laura Linney – now he’s a lass who knows what she likes. And she sticks with it. She fancies a one shoulder frock for her red carpet appearances.
It’s also pretty clear exactly which shoulder she favours too….
Although this is not a fab frock as I do not like the sleeve which is not attached to anything. If you have a one shoulder, then you also have a one sleeve…..and back off on the make up too Laura Darl….
And this is a shocker of an ensemble, but again, the one shoulder….!!
Let’s face it – after a certain age, there are some things that are not appropriate, however, there are many that are. I feel the moral of this post is this “If you know what suits you and works for your shape, stick with it, be it colour, or style”
Till next time, x
Great album, thank you. For those of us “of a certain age” it is nice to be reassured that there are others of that certain age that get it so right.
The cute poppet in yellow in the background of the Meryl (stunning!) grey frock photo is clearly thinking “I want to be like that when I grow up”. Don’t we all. Sigh.
